The Economic and Social Council (CES) of Alcoy has overwhelmingly supported making Saturday, April 24th, and Monday, April 26th, the local holidays for 2027, a decision that will allow the Moors and Christians festivities to be celebrated entirely over a weekend.

The proposal, driven by the municipal government, received the backing of almost all CES representatives, with only the People's Party abstaining, stating their disagreement with the dates proposed for 2027. This agreement means the Moors and Christians' Entrada (Entrance) will take place on Saturday, April 24th, the feast of Saint George on Sunday the 25th, and Monday, April 26th, will be the day of the Alardo and a local holiday.
The mayor of Alcoy, Toni Francés, positively assessed the outcome, highlighting the CES's ability to prioritize the general interest and reach broad agreements. He noted that the near-unanimous support confirms this option aligns with the majority sentiment of Alcoy's society. The proposal stems from an open dialogue process with various sectors represented in the CES, following the withdrawal of the initially planned schedule from the July Ordinary Plenary session.
Francés recalled that Alcoy has two local holidays, and keeping April 23rd as a holiday would have necessitated making the day of the Entrada or Alardo a working day, negatively impacting the festivities' development and public participation. The People's Party, meanwhile, advocated for keeping April 23rd as a holiday, although its spokesperson, Carlos Pastor, abstained from the vote, explaining he was voting as a bloc on dates proposed up to 2030.
The favorable opinion from the CES will now be presented to the Extraordinary Plenary of the City Council on Thursday, July 16th, for the final decision on the 2027 local holidays, thus meeting the deadline set by the Generalitat for the next year's work calendar.
