Alcoy City Council, together with the Association of Saint George, has unveiled a commemorative 'auca' for the 750th anniversary of the Battle of Alcoy, an initiative to bring history closer to citizens, especially the younger generation.
The work, consisting of 24 panels, was created based on texts by historians Lluís Vidal and Elisa Beneyto, with illustrations by Rosanna Crespo and Quique Soler. The Gabinet de Promoció del Valencià also collaborated on the project.
The 'auca' does not solely focus on the 1276 battle but contextualizes the preceding and subsequent historical events, including the arrival of Jaume I, the rule of Al-Azraq, the Pact of Pouet, the Mudéjar revolts, the charter of Alcoy, the battle where Al-Azraq died, and episodes like the 1304 attack, to understand the formation of devotion to Saint George.
“
"The objective was to give the work a fundamentally historical, but also didactic, focus. Furthermore, we have tried to convey impartially both the Muslim and Christian viewpoints, with the aim of offering a rigorous and balanced explanation of the events."
“
"We are fortunate that our festivals and our patronage stem from a real historical event, and it is important to make it known, especially to schools and children, so they know our history and where the devotion to Saint George in Alcoy began."
“
"These initiatives allow young people to learn about the history of our city in an easy way, with illustrations, and to better understand what happened."
The 'auca' will be distributed in various formats: reproductions on foam board for educational centers, A4 copies to be distributed with the newspaper and among students to take home, and larger copies for shops, administrations, and other public spaces to broaden dissemination.
The Councillor for Festivals, Jordi Martínez, thanked all participants for their involvement and highlighted the collaboration with the Association of Saint George in the programming for the 750th anniversary.
