The ordinary council meeting of San Vicente del Raspeig in July addressed several key points, including the modification of the urban public transport service contract due to tariff reductions last year and an institutional declaration supporting Alicante's bid for the European Capital of Innovation Awards-iCapital 2027.
The municipality unanimously ratified its favorable position towards Alicante's candidacy, expressing a desire to be part of a shared vision of innovation and to project the capacity for coordinated work towards competitiveness and economic development.
On behalf of the Socialist Party, María Jesús Moreno proposed the drafting of the Municipal Ordinance for the Protection of Urban Trees. The socialists withdrew a point from their initial proposal after the spokesperson for the Popular Group and councilor for Parks and Gardens, Mercedes Torregrosa, suggested that the drafting should be exclusively handled by municipal technicians. Torregrosa recalled that the Popular Party would vote in favor of the ordinance but noted that the previous government, formed by the PSOE and Esquerra Unida, had eight years to initiate it.
The initiative to begin drafting the ordinance passed with 19 votes in favor from the PP, PSOE, EU-UP, and Compromís, and 5 against from Vox. The process will include a phase of citizen participation and prior consultation with environmental, neighborhood, and local technical groups.
The councilor for EU-UP, Natalia Jeréz, advocated for a motion to request the habilitation of municipal facilities as study and group work rooms for ESO, Baccalaureate, FP, and University students, especially during periods of high academic workload. The Councilor for Youth, Ricardo Bernabeu, indicated that the Youth Department is already studying which spaces can be made available. He also recalled that the Popular Party had presented a similar motion in 2021 which was approved, although the government team at the time (PSOE and Esquerra Unida) abstained. The proposal was unanimously approved.
Alberto Beviá (EU-UP) presented a motion on climate adaptation, energy efficiency, and modernization of the municipality's early childhood and primary education centers. The head of Education, Melania Llopis, stated that the Generalitat Valenciana has already launched the Plan EduClima, allocating 240,000 euros to the 19 public educational centers in the municipality, with provisions adapted to each one's needs, and that the City Council is already working on the necessary technical planning within its competencies. The motion did not pass due to a lack of support.
Finally, socialist spokesperson Asunción París proposed the development of a municipal plan for universal accessibility and the creation of a Municipal Board for this purpose. The councilor for Social Rights, Mariela Torregrosa, explained that San Vicente already has a Municipal Council for Functional Diversity that addresses issues of universal accessibility. She added that part of what is requested is already being done or will be worked on by the competent body. The motion was not approved by the Governing team.
