The license was granted by the General Directorate of Pharmacy of the Department of Health to the Joint Unit for Biomedical Design and Manufacturing, known as BioFab. This unit, promoted by the Alicante Institute for Health and Biomedical Research and the University of Alicante, will be able to produce biomodels and surgical guides adapted to each patient's anatomy directly at the hospital.
Until now, the hospital relied on external suppliers to obtain these three-dimensional replicas. In-house manufacturing will allow medical and biomedical engineering teams to collaborate closely, reducing waiting times and improving the planning of complex interventions.
BioFab's activity will be fully integrated into daily clinical practice, initially focusing on the Radiodiagnostics and Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology departments. Using these models will allow specialists to rehearse operations on exact replicas before entering the operating room.
To share these advances, the unit will organize the Innovation in Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology Conference on October 16 at the Auditorium of the Official College of Physicians of Alicante, where the results of these 3D manufacturing technologies will be showcased.
