11 People Rescued from Sunken Catamaran Near Tabarca

The municipal vessel Speis II intervened quickly thanks to its proximity and a new agreement with Maritime Rescue.

The City Council of Alicante has rescued 11 people alive and in good condition after a catamaran belonging to a diving company sank in waters near the island of Tabarca.

The municipality's Prevention, Firefighting, and Rescue Service (Speis) received the alert from Maritime Rescue (Sasemar) and activated the vessel Speis II. The rapid response was key, as the boat was part of a special summer patrol in Tabarca, allowing it to reach the incident site within minutes.
Thanks to the proximity and swift intervention of the municipal personnel, the 11 individuals on board the catamaran were immediately assisted, preventing the situation from worsening.

The Head of Security, Julio Calero, highlighted that the establishment of the special summer patrol with the presence of Speis II has substantially improved the emergency response capacity in an area with high nautical activity during the summer. He also emphasized that the agreement with Maritime Rescue optimizes coordination and reduces intervention times.
Calero added that investments in maritime safety directly impact the protection of people, and that the proximity of the Speis personnel and immediate activation through established protocols were decisive for the successful rescue.
Both the councilor and the head of Speis praised the professionalism of the personnel and the excellent coordination with Maritime Rescue, confirming the success of the measures to enhance the coverage and safety of the waters off Alicante and Tabarca.
