The University of Alicante (UA) hosted the first Ibero-American Forum on Supercomputing and Artificial Intelligence, organized by the Council of Ibero-American Universities (CUIB), aiming to analyze the university's role in the advancement of these technologies.

The event, held as part of the CUIB's plenary assembly, brought together university and higher education representatives from Ibero-America. According to the forum's coordinator and Secretary General of the CYTED Program, Félix García Lausín, the objective is to analyze the role of universities in the rapid advancement of technologies linked to artificial intelligence from a practical perspective.
The forum addressed the changes facing the Ibero-American university system due to the unstoppable progress of supercomputing and AI, as well as the challenges of transformation in teaching, management, and research. The role of universities as knowledge transfer centers to enhance the competitiveness of Ibero-American countries in these sectors was also highlighted.
The inaugural ceremony took place in the Boardroom of the Rectorate and General Services building at UA, with speeches from the rector, Amparo Navarro, and former rector and founder of Torre Juana OTS, Andrés Pedreño, who delivered the opening lecture.
Speakers agreed on placing universities at the epicenter of research, regulation, and ethical application of new technologies, emphasizing the centrality of people in the ethical, regulatory, and governance dimensions of AI and supercomputing.
Experts such as Andrés Pedreño, author of works on AI, and Faraón Llorens, Professor of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence at UA and recipient of the National Computer Science Award 2025, participated in the forum. Llorens shared his vision on the application of AI in teaching and learning processes.
The Council of Ibero-American Universities comprises the main national university organizations, such as CRUE in Spain. The meeting in Alicante is part of several ministerial Ibero-American conferences taking place in the city this week.
