The renovation and expansion works at Rosalía de Castro Square, part of the 'Elda parte de ti' investment plan, are progressing with the aim of creating a new green area exceeding 1,500 square meters in the heart of the Nueva Fraternidad neighborhood. The Department of Public Space and Investments of the Elda City Council is focusing on landscaping enhancements to achieve a harmony of tree species adapted to the local climate, providing shaded areas and acting as climate refuges.
Approximately twenty new trees of various species, including celtis australis, cercis, prunus, koeleuterias paniculatas, and pyrus, will be planted, along with a wide variety of shrubs. The goal is to create a homogeneous green mass that reduces the urban heat island effect in this significant area of the Elda neighborhood.
To ensure accessible and functional pathways, some existing trees are being relocated. These palm trees, elms, and mulberries will be moved to both the Nueva Fraternidad park, close to the square, and the Josefina Manresa park in the Numancia neighborhood. This approach ensures the survival of mature specimens and reinforces other green spaces within the city, optimizing resources.
The new square will feature over thirty mature trees, combining new plantings with existing ones that will remain in place. This project transforms a historically neglected space into a meeting point, relaxation area, and leisure spot for residents, particularly children, given its proximity to several schools.
The comprehensive redevelopment includes new paving, urban furniture integrated into green areas, picnic tables, safe and inclusive children's play areas, and spaces for health and wellness activities. Additionally, lighting is being upgraded to more efficient LED technology, new drainage systems are being implemented for natural rainwater management, and drip irrigation is being installed for responsible water consumption.
