The L'Eliana City Council celebrated Local Police Day 2026 this Tuesday, a day to recognize the dedication of its officers and the collaboration of other security forces, emergency services, and the community. The event was attended by the mayor, Salva Torrent; the Councilor for Citizen Security, Enrique Martínez; the new chief inspector, Alfonso Azcoitia; members of the Corporation, and representatives of local associative fabric.
Torrent announced the expansion of flood and fire prevention systems, which will include ten new cameras in the Mandor ravine and flood-prone areas, along with seven dual thermal lens cameras in Entrepins. The deployment will be complemented by alert speakers for fires and a free neighborhood information application.
The mayor emphasized the selection processes to fill ten permanent agent positions, as well as the continuous training of the staff and their road safety education efforts in schools. He also highlighted the reduction in serious accidents and improvements in traffic calming, pedestrian crossings, and speed controls. Furthermore, he announced the processing of an ordinance to enhance safety in the use of scooters.
For his part, Azcoitia reported on the nearly 10,000 police services attended this year, including over 375 humanitarian services and eleven for life-threatening emergencies.
During the event, distinctions were awarded for life-saving actions, intervention in fires, crime resolution, and conflict mediation, as well as for professional careers and citizen collaboration. Distinctions from the Government of Spain were also presented for participation in security and humanitarian aid operations during the 2024 DANA (flash flood).
One of the most emotional moments was the tribute to José Alberto Policarpo, recently retired, who began his career in l’Eliana in 1983 and led the force since 2022. The mayor thanked him for his dedication and expressed confidence in Alfonso Azcoitia, who has been with the Local Police for over 25 years, to continue providing a close and effective service.
