The Merenguina festival, one of the most curious and fun celebrations in the Valencian Community, returns to Llíria at the end of August. This year marks its 32nd edition, transforming the San Francisco courtyard into the stage for an authentic candy war.
The celebration will take place on Monday, August 24th, as part of the Fiestas de la Purísima in the Raval neighborhood. Starting at 11:00 PM, the San Francisco courtyard, a historic space linked to the former 17th-century Franciscan convent, will be transformed for approximately half an hour into the epicenter of a battle where over 15,000 artisanal meringues, made by local bakeries, will be the protagonists.
The festival's mechanics are simple: thousands of meringues are distributed among participants, and when the moment arrives, the massive throwing begins. Spontaneity and fun are key, making the Merenguina a family tradition passed down through generations.
La Merenguina was born in 1994 and has since grown to become one of the most anticipated moments of the Raval festivities. Its recognition culminated in 2019, when the Generalitat Valenciana declared it a Local Festival of Tourist Interest.
After the meringue battle, the party continues with a large foam party to clean up the participants, followed by music, a street party, and a mobile disco, extending the celebration into the early morning hours.
