The ‘Va de Dones’ campaign aims to highlight the significant contribution and leading role of women in Bétera's August Festivals, as well as in the town's social and cultural life. The Hort de les Alfàbegues hosted the symbolic 'christening' of the 16 Alfàbegues that will star in La Rodà through the streets of Bétera on August 15th. These plants will bear the names of 16 women, including this year's four Obreras and others linked to local traditions.
The mayor of Bétera, Elia Verdevío, emphasized that this initiative pays homage to the role of women in the town's history and present, valuing their contribution to development and the preservation of traditions.
For the first time, the largest Alfàbegues will be dedicated to the Inmaculada Concepción, Perpetual Mayor of Bétera, and to the Asunción, the Marian invocation of the festivals. Tribute will also be paid to this year's four single and married Obreras, as well as their mothers and daughters who were also Obreras.
The Councilor for Festivals, Manuel Pérez, highlighted that the August Festivals are a symbol of Bétera's identity, kept alive by the commitment of generations of residents.
The Alfàbegues will also carry the names of Amparo Doménech Palau (mayor 1999-2003), Marieta Guerrero Ricart (cultural association l’Aljama), Amparo Garay Cebrián (Pensat i Fet Rondalla i Ballaors), Mari Luz Asensi Ramón (president of the Bétera Musical Artistic Center), and Amparo Martínez and Maru Martínez, known as ‘las Palmeras’.
The Councilor for Heritage, Women, and Equality, Marisa Martínez, pointed out that the ‘Va de Dones’ campaign seeks to recognize the mark left by the women of Bétera on collective history and thank them for their contribution to preserving this tradition.
This year, the August Festivals take on special significance by honoring the essential role of women in Bétera's history, culture, and traditions, acknowledging their contribution to the transmission of a heritage that is a symbol of the town.
