Sagunt's Mayor, Darío Moreno, accused the Compromís municipal group of 'soiling' the institutional declaration, which had been previously agreed upon by all political groups. He criticized them for introducing criticisms regarding the municipal agricultural policy. Iniciativa Porteña (IP) also supported these criticisms.
Compromís spokesperson, Maria Josep Picó, had used the agenda item to call for more concrete actions for the agricultural sector, labeling the proposal 'hypocritical'. She recalled the dissolution of the Agrarian Council, the lack of intervention in disaster-stricken areas, and the loss of agricultural land for the construction of a photovoltaic plant for a gigafactory.
Picó's remarks provoked the mayor's reaction, who considered that the 'institutional commitment' had been 'broken' and that the intervention was 'out of place'. From Iniciativa Porteña, their spokesperson, Eduardo Márquez, also accused Compromís of 'campaigning' and intervening with 'electoral intent' in a unanimous agreement.
Ultimately, the declaration was unanimously approved. The objective is to recognize the contribution of the agricultural sector to the city's economic, social, and environmental development. The City Council will organize activities to promote the local agricultural sector, which has historically been strategic for Sagunt, shaping its landscape, economy, culture, and identity.
The institutional declaration, set for September 9th (coinciding with World Agriculture Day), aims to raise social awareness, promote educational activities, highlight the sector's role, encourage generational succession, boost local product consumption, and reinforce Sagunt's rural identity. It emphasizes the importance of Valencian citrus cultivation, which faces challenges but also opportunities in innovation, digitalization, and sustainability.
