The headquarters of the Association of Relatives of People with Alzheimer's in Elche (AFAE) hosted this Monday the commemoration of World Alzheimer's Day, celebrated every September 21st. The event included the reading of a manifesto under the slogan ‘No is no longer an answer’.
The event was attended by the mayor Pablo Ruz, accompanied by several municipal councilors: Celia Lastra (Social Action), Aurora Rodil (Childhood Family and Seniors), Loli Serna (Districts), and Claudio Guilabert (Public Services), along with other members of the municipal corporation.
The manifesto was read by the president of AFAE, José F. Barragán, and the vice-president, Carmen Román, along with a volunteer, a professional, and a user of the center. It was stated that “Alzheimer's does not wait, and neither can we continue waiting,” criticizing the lack of a positive response from public funding in Spain and the postponement of decisions while the disease progresses.
AFAE advocates for the right to decide on the life and health of diagnosed individuals, demanding that available treatments be used equitably, a prepared healthcare system, and that lack of planning does not lead to waiting lists. The need for early diagnosis, healthcare monitoring, specialized social and sociosanitary care, support for caregivers, and resources for all phases of the disease was also emphasized.
Mayor Pablo Ruz highlighted the municipal commitment to the well-being of those affected and thanked AFAE, its board of directors, and its professionals for their work. He announced the study of a possible increase in the agreement with the association and the upcoming inauguration of a new space, co-financed by the City Council with 50,000 euros, which will expand care services.
The event concluded with a release of green balloons and a flashmob performed by AFAE professionals. It was recalled that Alzheimer's is the most common cause of dementia worldwide, and in the Valencian Community, nearly 600,000 people live with its consequences.
