The foundation has now been officially constituted, marking a decisive step towards the restoration of one of Elche's most emblematic buildings. The total cost of the rehabilitation has been estimated at 10 million euros. The new entity, which will not be canonical but a non-profit foundation chaired by the bishop, aims to open avenues for funding and attract potential patrons for the temple's preservation.
The rector of Santa María, Vicente Martínez, announced that the foundation has been a year in the making and that its statutes and board composition will be made public soon. Additionally, a information office will open in early September to publicize the project and handle public inquiries.
The basilica's condition, documented by previous studies, reveals issues such as foundation movements, water infiltration through the roofs, and deterioration of the limestone, which is particularly sensitive to pollution and bird droppings. The first phase of works, focusing on reinforcing the central nave, arches, and buttresses, was previously estimated at approximately 3.6 million euros.
“"The rehabilitation must be addressed in an orderly and prompt manner. Having a complete diagnosis and a drafted project today is precisely what allows us to approach the rehabilitation with criteria and planning, rather than as an improvised reaction."
The current baroque basilica was inaugurated on October 3, 1784, after 111 years of construction, and has undergone several interventions throughout its history, including repairs after the 1936 fire.
