Two professors from the Miguel Hernández University of Elche (UMH), Francisco Julián Martínez Cano and Rocío Cifuentes Albeza, have presented the book 'Virtual Reality Experience Design Handbook: heuristics, patterns, and practices for immersive applications' at the University of Aveiro (Portugal).

The publication is one of the main outcomes of the European project ABRAXAS – Best Practices for High-Immersion Experiences Design, funded by the European Union. The presentation took place during the project's closing meeting, where the UMH academics participated alongside faculty from the Łódź University of Technology (Poland) and the University of Vigo.
The work, edited by eight researchers from the four consortium universities, is organized into four parts: foundations of presence; interaction, locomotion, and interfaces; narrative, social dimension, ethics, and accessibility; and heuristics, performance, and validation. It explains how to translate screen design patterns into spatial experiences and how to use spatial sound, lighting, or animation to guide attention.
The handbook, comprising 16 chapters, offers a practical guide for creating intuitive and inclusive virtual reality experiences. It is aimed at professionals, educators, and students in fields such as audiovisual communication, design, and application development. It proposes applicable tools such as a specific heuristic framework for virtual reality, checklists, and immersive experiences developed by the OCAP research group at UMH.
The publication was edited by Rocío Cifuentes Albeza and Francisco Julián Martínez Cano (UMH), along with researchers from the University of Vigo, the Łódź University of Technology, and the University of Aveiro. It has been published by CRC Press (Taylor & Francis) and is available in open access, with its PDF downloadable for free from the project's website.
