The Museum of the Reconquista of Orihuela is hosting, from November 4th to December 1st, a retrospective exhibition dedicated to José Ferrández Ortuño, a painter, draftsman, and designer from Orihuela.

The exhibition, organized by the Department of Culture, brings together a selection of works that trace the artistic career of a multifaceted creator whose legacy is part of the cultural history of Orihuela.
The selection includes oil and tempera paintings on paper and canvas, showcasing the artist's masterful command of color and light. His works are primarily located in Orihuela, Alicante, and Murcia, forming part of public and private collections, including notable pieces in the sacristy of the church of Nuestra Señora de Monserrate in Orihuela.
Ferrández Ortuño was noted for his versatility across painting, graphic design, and drawing. In painting, he excelled in his command of color, composition, and Mediterranean light. In graphic design, he applied his creativity to visual communication with a modern aesthetic, collaborating with media such as the newspaper Información during the sixties and seventies. As a draftsman, he left numerous illustrations and sketches.
Born in Orihuela in 1933, José Ferrández Ortuño began his academic training at the Oratorio Festivo de San Miguel and later at the Colegio de Santo Domingo. After intending to study Medicine in Madrid, his artistic vocation led him to enroll in a Fine Arts academy, where he won the First National Painting Prize from the Círculo de Bellas Artes de Atocha in 1957.
This initiative by the Department of Culture aims to highlight local artistic heritage and recognize Orihuela's creators, with the collaboration of his son, Roberto Ferrández Gil, also a painter.
