The works, carried out by municipal brigades under technical supervision, focus on pillar sanitation, dismantling problematic shelves, facade and roof cleaning, waterproofing critical points, removing plaster damage, and repainting. These interventions precede a larger-scale action to address structural problems that have plagued the center for decades.
In parallel, the City Council is preparing a plot for the Generalitat Valenciana where prefabricated classrooms could be installed. This measure would allow for the execution of the center's comprehensive rehabilitation or the solution determined by the Conselleria d'Educació (Regional Ministry of Education).
The mayor of Orihuela, Pepe Vegara, has highlighted that the school's refurbishment is a municipal priority and reiterated the local government's commitment to finding a definitive solution that adapts the center to current needs. Vegara assured that the City Council has been working on this solution since he took office.
The CEIP Virgen de la Puerta, received in 1972 and operational since 1973, already showed structural problems such as cracks in the multi-purpose hall's slab and in the east area of the playground just a few years after opening. These deficiencies led to a temporary evacuation in 1990, and despite various alternatives proposed over the years, none had materialized until now.
While maintenance works are underway for the start of classes, the definition of a long-term solution for the building, which will depend on the Conselleria d'Educació's decision, remains pending. The City Council, meanwhile, is already preparing the space for the temporary relocation of students to prefabricated classrooms.
