Any resident over 18 years old, belonging to a Carnival 'colla' (group) in Alcalà-Alcossebre, and who has not had a monarch in the last five editions, is eligible to apply. They must represent a 'colla' that has participated in at least the previous two Carnival editions. An individual cannot apply for more than one 'colla', and only one candidate will be presented per 'colla'.
The regulations also outline the duties and privileges of the role, such as attending official events. Interested parties must submit an entry registration at the Alcalà-Alcossebre City Council, either in person or electronically, from November 3rd to November 6th. Children wishing to apply for the junior king or queen role must also submit their applications, following the same registration system, with their parents acting as guarantors.
On Saturday, November 7th, during the Precarnaval celebration starting at 9:00 PM at the Espai d’Oci de Alcalà, the draw will determine who will hold the titles. The event will feature 'colla' participation and a 'sobaquillo' dinner (bring-your-own-food).
“"At the request of the 'collas', we have decided to move the election of the Carnival king or queen forward from January, as this gives them more time to prepare their floats and costumes."
The 2027 Carnival will be celebrated in Alcalà from February 5th to 7th, and in Alcossebre from February 12th to 14th.
