Ontinyent was present at the Architecture Week organized by the Official College of Architects of Alicante (CTAA). The city participated in the exhibition dedicated to the XXII COACV Architecture Awards 2025, showcasing the transformation project of La Canterería and the creation of the Parc de les Mamàs Belgues. This initiative, promoted by the Ontinyent City Council, received the Urbanism and Landscape Award from this entity for its urban and landscape regeneration intervention following the 2019 DANA (flash flood).
The event, held last Thursday at the CTAA's headquarters, reviewed the awarded projects in the XXII COACV Architecture Awards 2025. The Councilor for Territory, Óscar Borrell, participated remotely to explain the transformation process of one of the areas most affected by the Clariano river flood into a new public space and natural infrastructure for water management.
Borrell recalled the improved hydrological safety of the area, which previously suffered from potential floods and now features a safer space. The project took five years from the September 2019 DANA, involving the relocation of over 60 people.
With the architecture team comprising Rafa Mira, Sari Calatayud, Ana Sanchis, and Sílvia Párraga, the construction project for the Parc de les Mamàs Belgues was developed. This park is conceived as an urban regeneration, renaturalization, and flood risk adaptation initiative, reclaiming an area historically linked to the river.
The intervention focused on removing affected buildings and restoring the space for the river and citizens. The result is an urban park that functions as natural infrastructure to absorb periodic floods and promote biodiversity. The Urbanism and Landscape Award from the XXII COACV Architecture Awards 2025 specifically recognizes the combination of urban regeneration, landscape, renaturalization, and resilience against extreme weather events.
