The night of Monday, July 6, was particularly hot in La Safor, with several towns recording temperatures above 26 degrees during the early morning. In Palma de Gandia, a maximum of 34.3 degrees was reached at 11:15 PM, making it the highest nocturnal temperature in the Valencian Community. At midnight, the temperature dropped slightly to 33 degrees, sharing the podium with Dénia.
The councilor of Palma de Gandia, César Ferri, described the night as "suffocating, like suffering a midday 'ponentà' but at night, without knowing where the hot air was coming from." Due to similar situations last summer, the City Council decided to open the municipal pool at night on Fridays, a measure that continues this year.
Other municipalities in the region also suffered infernal nights. In Oliva, 31 degrees were recorded at midnight. Other high temperatures include El Real de Gandia (26 degrees), Simat (26.8 degrees), and Villalonga (26.2 degrees).
The City Council of Palma de Gandia issued a warning on social media to alert the public and recommend protection. The mayor, Paula Femenia, highlighted the municipality's recent investment in a meteorological station connected to the Avamet network.
As measures against the heatwave, municipal workers working outdoors will finish their day at 12 PM. Air-conditioned public spaces have been provided, such as a study room, the Youth Center, and the Aula Respir for the elderly. The municipal pool is open until 8 PM, with a nocturnal opening on Fridays until 11 PM. The instructors of the 'Escoleta d'Estiu' (Summer School) have also received instructions to protect children during the central hours of the day. Furthermore, the air conditioning in the auditorium has recently been installed, with an investment of 56,759 euros.
The city councils of La Safor have taken extraordinary measures in response to the heatwave, such as free access to swimming pools in Gandia, the suspension of outdoor activities in Oliva, and the cancellation of the 'porrat' and the procession of the Crist de la Sant in Tavernes de la Valldigna.
