The Sueca City Council, through its Animal Welfare Department, has publicly denounced the ongoing abandonment of cats near the Muntanyeta dels Sants. This uncivil conduct results in detrimental consequences for the local ecosystem, affecting flora and fauna, as well as for people who frequent the natural environment.
Studies indicate that the increase in the feline population is not due to recent breeding, as no new litters have been detected in the last six years, and the existing population is managed through sterilizations. However, 36 abandonments have occurred this year alone, demonstrating that this situation stems from a recurring action over time.
“"The abandonment of animals is a crime classified in the penal code. After being cared for and living in a safe environment, the abandoned animal suddenly finds itself in a different space, exposed to accidents, diseases, and problems arising from that behavior."
Councillor Xavi Fos emphasized the harmful effects of this practice, not only for the animals' welfare but also on an environmental level. He highlighted that, as predators, cats can impact the ecosystem and biodiversity of a natural park. Fos added that, although the animals should not be in this situation, the council is working for their well-being.
The councillor thanked the selfless collaboration of animal welfare organizations and volunteers who are responsible for the controlled feeding of the felines, acknowledging their work and knowledge of current regulations.
