The Ministry of Health has taken a decisive step towards the construction of the new General Hospital of Castellón. The department, led by Marciano Gómez, has commenced the compulsory expropriation process for the pending plots where the future healthcare and assistance center will be located. This action, published in the Official Gazette of the Generalitat Valenciana (DOGV) on August 24th, involves summoning property owners for September 18th at 9:30 AM at the Castelló City Hall, specifically at the offices of the Quatre Cantons building.
The purpose of this appearance is the "lifting of the payment deeds for the concurrent amount or limit of agreement," as detailed by the DOGV. The necessity of occupation had already been declared previously, following the approval of the expropriation project in October 2025, considering the works of general and public interest.
This progress follows the request made last April by Sanidad (Health) to the capital city council for the building permit. The project includes the construction of a new center and the renovation of the existing building, spanning a total area of 123,479 square meters. The project's justification is based on the anticipated increase in specialized outpatient consultations, surgical procedures, hospitalizations, and chronic patient care, necessitating new spaces and functional restructuring.
The total investment for the new General Hospital of Castellón amounts to 507 million euros. The new center will represent a significant leap in services, with a considerable increase in operating rooms (from 15 to 31), intervention rooms (from 8 to 26), single rooms (from 261 to 765), and ICU beds (from 29 to 58).
The project began its activation in early 2025 with the contracting of project design and construction management for 10.5 million euros. The contract for this phase was awarded to the companies Árgola Arquitectos, Promec, Aic Equip, and Leing. Subsequently, in December, initial clearing work began on the plots. According to the Ministry's initial timeline, the construction execution will be awarded by the end of 2026, with work scheduled to start in the first quarter of 2027 and conclude in 2033.
