The mayor of Moncofa, Wences Alós Valls, recalled that the investment planned for this work, budgeted at 38.21 million euros, has been announced but remains unexecuted. "What we need are investments, because as long as they are not carried out, the risks persist," he stated, adding that "we demand security, not risks".
From Moncofa Town Hall, they recall that it is not only the population of Moncofa that is affected by heavy rains that overflow the canal, but also Nules and Burriana. "We are all affected," explains Alós, who remembers that "the severity of the situation was already experienced a decade ago, when in Moncofa we had to evacuate part of the population".
The mayor considers this work "not discretionary, it is a priority" and that "the problem is that as long as action is not taken, the risks remain." To mitigate them, in addition to the intervention to be financed by the Spanish Government, Alós also considers it necessary to install flow meters in the rivers to assess the increase in river flow. "In Moncofa, it would be necessary to install one of these systems in the Belcaire. It would be of great help," he declares.
Finally, from Moncofa Town Hall, they recall that "all administrations must work to guarantee citizen safety and prevent risks." "There is no justification for not taking preventive measures to resolve this situation. We hope the commitments will be met because we already know the consequences of inaction," they conclude.
