The town of Nules has celebrated the Nit dels Farolets on its beaches, an event part of the Festes de Sant Roc. This year marked the twelfth edition of this revived festival, which keeps alive the tradition of decorating watermelons, passed down through generations.
Throughout Thursday afternoon, various activities took place, including the Taller de Farolets (Watermelon Workshop) at l'Estany park. This family-oriented and inclusive workshop allowed participants to decorate their own watermelon. A new addition this year was the Taller ball de cabudes i cabuts (Parade of 'Cabuts' and Giants Workshop), aiming to raise awareness of these traditional Nules figures.
The day concluded with a night parade featuring the Dimonis del Poll, the Dolçainers i Tabaleters de Nules, along with Nules' own giants and 'cabezudos', and the Associació de Cabuts i Gegants de la Vilavella.
Ramón Martínez from the Department of Traditions stated, "this festival is more alive than ever." He emphasized the town council's support for collaborating associations in promoting this festival, which was revived 12 years ago by the Associació Cultural la Corretjola and is now well-established. The goal is to educate about its origins and allow both children and families to enjoy a different day at the beach.
In other news, Nules beach also hosted the fifth edition of Casetes Obertes (Open Huts), focusing on the region's cultural and natural values with guided tours and exhibitions to highlight the traditional historical huts as a Local Heritage Site. Additionally, the fifth Festa de la Tomata (Tomato Festival) took place, featuring traditional recipes made with local tomato varieties. This program is promoted by the Associació Platges de Nules.
Councillor Ramón Martínez highlighted the importance of this initiative for "knowing who we are and reconnecting with the traditions of the town of Nules".
