Throughout the weekend of September 25th to 27th, Burriana will host the 10th Medieval Days of the Reconquista, organized by the City Council's Culture Department. These days will feature a varied program including historical reenactments, solemn ceremonies, parades, literary readings, and participatory activities.
The first day, Friday, September 25th, will commence at 08:45 AM in the Council Chamber with a public reading of the Cantar de Mío Cid. The event will involve municipal representatives, members of the Brotherhood of the Ladies and Knights of El Cid and Doña Jimena of Castellón, local residents, and students from the town's institutes. The Councilor for Culture, Alejandro Clausell, will read the second canto, which mentions Burriana twice. The morning session will conclude with the historical talk "El Cid through the Eyes of Islam".
On Saturday, September 26th, activities will move to the streets and the Juan Varea Auditorium. In the morning, an experimental archaeology camp will be set up with displays of clothing and chainmail, accompanied by medieval combat demonstrations. In the afternoon, starting at 5:30 PM, a solemn ceremony will take place for the Appointment of new Ladies and Knights of the Order of El Cid and Doña Jimena by Peter I of Aragon and Inés of Aquitaine. This event will reenact the signing of the alliance between El Cid and King Peter I, which occurred in Burriana in November 1094, as well as the Oath of Santa Gadea. The day will conclude with a grand medieval parade through the central streets at 8:00 PM, popular appointments, and medieval dance performances.
Sunday, September 27th, will be dedicated to the Templar era. At 11:30 AM, the Sant Blai Cultural Space will host the solemn appointment of a Lady and Knight of the Templar Commandery of La Plana, with the presence of figures representing James I and Na Violant d’Hongria. A brief historical reenactment of King James I granting the Carta Pobla (Town Charter) to Burriana will be staged. The event will culminate with a Templar parade at 12:30 PM, appointments for children and adults, participatory dance workshops, and the singing of the anthem Non Nobis Domine at 2:00 PM.
The Councilor for Culture, Alejandro Clausell, highlighted the significance of these events in valuing key historical moments, such as the alliance between King Peter I and El Cid or the granting of the Carta Pobla by James I. Clausell expressed pride in the community's involvement and encouraged residents and visitors to enjoy a weekend of culture and tradition.
