The Councilor for Environment of the City Council of Castellón, Gonzalo Romero, accompanied the Director General of Natural and Animal Environment, Luis Gomis, on a visit to the trap cages installed in La Marjaleria of Castellón. These actions are part of the wild boar control device deployed by the Generalitat in the municipal area.
Since the work began in 2026, the device has 31 trap cages in La Plana, recording a total of 228 captures. The 11 cages installed in Castellón are part of urgent measures to reduce the population of this species due to the risk of African swine fever spread.
Gonzalo Romero pointed out that the overpopulation of wild boars poses a serious problem for road safety risks and damage to agricultural properties. He highlighted that the installation of new cages addresses a concern of the residents of La Marjaleria, especially during the summer season.
The councilor emphasized the importance of institutional collaboration, reinforced since last year with the support of the Generalitat Valenciana.
For his part, Luis Gomis explained that the Generalitat is intensifying control in areas with higher concentrations of specimens, such as agricultural and peri-urban zones, to reduce density and prevent problems with crops, road safety, citizen coexistence, and animal health.
The location of the trap cages is based on prior monitoring using camera trapping techniques, which has identified areas with the highest presence of specimens and optimized the capture device's effectiveness. These actions are also being carried out in municipalities such as Burriana, Vila-real, Alquerías, Almassora, and Benicàssim.
The objective of these measures is to minimize risks to animal health, such as the transmission of diseases like African swine fever, and to maintain wild boar populations within levels compatible with ecosystem conservation, agricultural activity, and public safety.
