The Plenary Hall of the Castellón City Council hosted the ordinary session corresponding to August, brought forward to July. During the session, progress was reported on the development of the city's climate oasis map, a unanimous decision was made to urge the Government of Spain to improve rail connections between Castellón, the north of the province, Tarragona, and Barcelona, and local holidays for 2027 were proposed.
The mayor of Castellón, Begoña Carrasco, highlighted that a climate oasis map is being developed to help citizens locate municipal buildings and other spaces for refuge during high temperature alerts. The drafting team has already visited 18 schools included in the project and is analyzing proposals to ensure they align with European funding.
The Councilor for Environment, Gonzalo Romero, informed that the City Council is already working on this map, which complements the planting of 2,145 trees since 2023. The initiative is part of the Local Action Plan of the Urban Agenda and the project Castellón Nature Network, funded with 3,499,691 euros by the European Regional Development Fund. The project includes climate refuges in 18 educational centers and actions in parks and roundabouts.
The council unanimously approved a proposal to improve train communications between Castellón, towns in the north of the province, Tarragona, and Barcelona. The initiative includes an early morning departure from Castellón, a more competitive rail network with more services and better schedules, and extending the route to Benicarló-Peñíscola. The mayor noted that the service is currently deficient and has room for improvement.
The plenary session also agreed to propose Monday, March 1 (the Monday of the Magdalena Festivals) and Tuesday, June 29 (Saint Peter, patron saint of El Grao) as local holidays for 2027.
Several members of the municipal corporation paid tribute to José Carlos Más, the recently deceased president of the El Meridiano Neighborhood Association, highlighting his altruistic work and commitment to the neighborhood movement.
