The exhibition, commemorating the 775th anniversary of the signing of the Privilege of Transfer of Castelló by King James I on September 8, 1251, opened its doors today at the Menador building. The foundational document, which marked the city's relocation from Castell Vell to the plain, can be viewed for the second time in the city's history.
Mayoress Begoña Carrasco highlighted the document's importance, emphasizing that "words written on a parchment forever change the destiny of a people." She recalled the promise of prosperity that the transfer represented and underscored Castelló's collective identity, from its streets and squares to the tile sector and tourism, as a result of those 134 words.
Carrasco thanked the Generalitat government for its support, particularly the Consortium of Museums, for making this celebration possible, as well as the collaboration of the National Historical Archive. She emphasized that the commemoration's goal is to honor the promise of prosperity for future generations.
The President of the Generalitat, Juanfran Pérez Llorca, stressed the importance of knowing one's origins to project the future, highlighting the need to invest in the city and offer opportunities, especially to young people. He assured the regional government's support to guarantee Castelló's future.
The exhibition's curator, historian Carles Senso, described the exhibition as a "public debate by the people of Castelló looking at history and deciding to establish frameworks for coexistence for the future," connecting with the people of the 13th century.
The exhibition "The Privilege of Existing. 1251 - 2026" will be open until November 8, with hours from Tuesday to Saturday from 10 am to 1 pm and from 5 pm to 8 pm, and Sundays from 10 am to 2 pm. Guided tours in Spanish and Valencian have been organized during September and October.
