The town of Benicàssim has seen a significant improvement in waste separation, with a 62.15% rise in the selective collection of plastic packaging, cans, cartons, and other recyclable materials during July 2026. This improvement is attributed to the recent installation of a new network of container islands, located within a maximum distance of 100 meters from each other, thus facilitating citizen participation.
In total, residents have separated 92.56 tons of waste in the yellow container, surpassing last year's figures and demonstrating a growing commitment to sustainability. These data confirm Benicàssim's progress towards a more environmentally friendly municipal model, aligned with the objectives set by the European Union.
The mayor, Susana Marqués, highlighted the importance of citizen involvement: "Citizens are increasingly committed and aware of the importance of separating waste. Through small daily gestures, we achieve great environmental accomplishments." For her part, the Councilor for the Environment, Vanessa Batalla, emphasized that the installation of the 600 container islands is fostering a real change in separation habits, adding that by the end of the year, all new machinery will be operational for a more efficient service.
This initiative allows the municipality to adapt to Law 7/2022 on waste and contaminated soils for a circular economy. Since June, environmental awareness campaigns have been conducted for residents and tourists, promoting responsible use of natural spaces.
The collection of packaging (yellow container) takes place from 6:00 AM to 1:00 PM on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. Cardboard (blue container) is collected on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays during the same hours. Organic waste (brown) and residual waste (black) are collected nightly from 11:00 PM to 6:00 AM daily during high season.
