The project, scheduled for completion in the first quarter of 2027, will revitalize one of the city's most emblematic buildings. The new Central Market will combine its traditional commercial activity with new gastronomic and tourist uses, and will feature over 3,200 square meters of ceramic flooring and wall coverings from Castelló.
Begoña Carrasco emphasized that "this project represents a new impetus for a city symbol, for a building that bridges the past, present, and future for generations of Castellón residents." The mayor highlighted that the renovation of the Central Market "is a firm commitment to the future of local commerce, job creation, the revitalization of the urban center, and the economy and proximity trade."
The total investment for the Central Market amounts to 9,707,293.56 euros, with 3.6 million coming from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the remainder from the municipal contribution. The mayor recalled the commitment made before taking office, stating, "Before becoming mayor, I came here and committed to the vendors and the residents of Castelló. I told them, and I signed it before a notary, that if they gave me their trust, we would do what no one else had done."
"And here we are, fulfilling our promise, with 60% of the work already executed. We will ensure that this project becomes a reality in the first quarter of 2027," affirmed Carrasco, emphasizing the scale of the undertaking and the collaborative effort.
In the fish market area, all individual iron structures for the stalls have been completed, and work is underway on the partition walls and counters. The new structure for this part of the building is also finished. In the meat and vegetable area, the installation of stall structures and pavement execution are progressing. Reinforcements have been made to the existing concrete pillars.
The installation of large roof windows is also in progress. Cleaning of the facade facing the Plaça Major with high-pressure water has been completed, and work is now underway on the facade of the Plaça Pescateria. The new Central Market will feature over 3,200 square meters of Castelló ceramics.
The future rooftop terrace, one of the project's unique features, already has its structure and access staircase completed. This new space is part of the Central Market's expansion into gastronomic and tourist uses, complementing its commercial activity and aiming to make it a "driver of the city and its commercial fabric."
The new Central Market will house 46 stalls, adding three new ones to the current 43. The installation is being coordinated with the vendors, and the municipal projection places the relocation to the permanent market in the first quarter of 2027.
