The works, expected to conclude in October, involve traffic restrictions on one lane, a measure similar to the one previously in effect until late July. Traffic heading towards the city center will remain open.
Mayor Marcos Zaragoza explained that the final phase of the bridge deck expansion has resumed to complete the work. He recalled that the bridge was temporarily opened for the Moors and Christians festivities and remained open throughout August, with the works now restarting to meet deadlines.
Zaragoza acknowledged that the resumption of works will cause inconvenience for residents and drivers but emphasized the necessity of these restrictions to ensure the completion of the expansion.
The Mayor pointed out that the project has been prolonged due to the decision to modify the original plan to widen the deck and guarantee the infrastructure's safety, adapting it to current traffic levels.
Urban Planning Councilor Pedro Ramis recalled that the initial project only planned a slight increase in sidewalk width, whereas the new project expands them to 2.4 meters and improves the overall aesthetics. The investment amounts to 858,387 euros, awarded to the company Pavasal.
The project includes a new concrete slab that will increase the bridge's width by half a meter on each side, reaching a total width of 11 meters (6.20 meters for the roadway and 2.4 meters for sidewalks). It will also improve potable water, telecommunications, and drainage networks, as well as lighting and traffic lights, and will renew the pavement and urban environment.
The Cervantes bridge, built between 1840 and 1878, is a key connection for vehicles and pedestrians. The structure features five brick vaults and five semicircular arches spanning 9 meters. An expansion carried out around 1950, with a riverside typology, caused structural problems that led to the suspension of works in July 2025.
The restoration project, drafted in 2021, initially focused on repairing damage from humidity and leaks. However, during the work, deficiencies in previous expansions were detected, leading the local government to modify the project to ensure the infrastructure's long-term durability and improve accessibility.
