An unusual incident disrupted the tranquility of La Fossa beach in Calp this midday, around 1:50 PM. A violent gust of wind suddenly unleashed, forming a small tornado or whirlwind that swept across about 300 meters of the beach. The event, which lasted only a few seconds, caused umbrellas and towels to fly through the air, generating panic among the bathers present.
According to eyewitnesses, the meteorological phenomenon formed rapidly and dissipated just as quickly. A child sustained a minor injury when a flying umbrella struck their head. The child's family immediately went to the beach's lifeguard station, located near the affected area, where the child received the necessary attention.
Bathers described the situation as "terrifying," trying to hold onto their belongings to prevent them from being carried away by the wind. Some had to walk nearly half a kilometer to retrieve their belongings once the whirlwind had dissipated. The phenomenon was concentrated in the sandy area, near the Zafiro restaurant.
This incident is part of a summer marked by extreme weather phenomena in the Marina Alta region, which has already experienced heatwaves, humid downbursts, and sudden storms, including the "rissaga" in Xàbia. La Fossa beach has since returned to normal, but the scare has left a lasting impression on those affected.
