Residents of El Verger and the Les Marines beach in Dénia can now breathe easier after firefighters brought under control the devastating fire at a scrapyard, preventing the flames from spreading.

The work of firefighters from Dénia and Oliva was formidable in quickly containing a fire that could have been catastrophic at the El Verger scrapyard. The blaze, which began around 4 PM, produced dense black smoke, prompting residents to be asked to confine themselves to their homes and seal doors and windows. By 7 PM, the smoke had dissipated, and the confinement was lifted.
The primary objective of the firefighting teams was to prevent the flames from reaching the hundreds of cars piled up on the premises. "Thank goodness. It could have been catastrophic," commented a farmer with orange groves near the scrapyard.
Currently, the scrapyard remains closed to the public, but operations have resumed. There are no longer flames or smoke, and the affected area is isolated. The Consorcio de Bomberos de Alicante has not officially declared the fire extinguished, but it is expected to be a matter of hours.
What remains is calcined scrap metal. The truck used for removing and compacting cars, as well as already pressed vehicles, have been completely carbonized. Fiberglass-hulled boats also burned, with this material causing the dense black smoke.
