The initial investment of 56.4 million euros will allow action on 400 hectares within the basins of the Túria, Poyo, Magro rivers, and the Picassent stream. The objective is to eradicate invasive reeds, plant nearly 400,000 native trees and plants, and thereby reduce the risks of floods and fires.
The Commissioner for Recovery, Raúl Mérida, highlighted the importance of "reconciling citizens with their streams and riverbanks," perceiving them as "safe green spaces" offering leisure alternatives. Invasive reeds, besides being flammable, block water flow, and their removal after the DANA storm cost 225 million euros.
The work will extend across 53 municipalities. The Magro basin will include 23 towns, such as Requena, Utiel, and Algemesí. The Túria area will cover 14 towns, including Paterna and Riba-roja. The Poyo zone will benefit 11 municipalities like Chiva and Torrent, while the Picassent stream will encompass Alcàsser and Beniparrell.
Although the ownership of the watercourses belongs to the State Administration, the Consell is undertaking these prevention tasks. This first phase, part of the Plan Endavant, focuses on areas affected by the storm, with plans to extend maintenance to other streams with a 500-year return period.
