The Rafelbunyol City Council has been recognized with one of the Walking Cities Awards 2026, in the small cities category, for its tactical urbanism initiative aimed at improving the safety of school environments.

The award highlights the involvement of children and young people in the co-design of actions at local educational centers, as well as interventions carried out in the Plaza de la Puríssima, which is part of the municipality's school paths network. The jury valued the council's ability to mobilize the educational community and families, fostering greater social awareness about the need to transform public spaces.
The educational and collaborative dimension of these initiatives has also been emphasized, as well as the use of temporary tactical urbanism elements. These techniques allow for evaluating results before consolidating improvements through definitive redevelopment.
“

"This recognition highlights a way of building cities in which childhood and citizen participation play a leading role. Improving school environments is not just about changing physical space, but also about involving citizens so they understand, share, and defend these transformations"

Fran López · Mayor of Rafelbunyol
“

"Tactical urbanism allows us to act quickly and economically, test what works, and adapt solutions to real needs. Our goal is to continue moving towards a Rafelbunyol where walking is a comfortable and safe option for daily commutes"

Mario Carrera · Councilor for Mobility and Sustainable Urban Development
The award was announced during the 13th Congress of the Network of Walking Cities, held last week in Vitoria-Gasteiz. Rafelbunyol joined this network, which brings together 98 cities and territories, following a proposal from the Mobility Department in the November 2025 plenary session. The municipality, with its flat terrain, is committed to promoting walking, considering that most journeys can be made in under 15 minutes.
