Eduardo García Haba and Juan José Ramírez García participated in the XXXII Latin American Congress of Hydraulic Engineering, held from October 19th to 24th in Valparaíso and Viña del Mar (Chile). During the event, García Haba presented two research projects on the implementation of Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS) and the use of permeable pavements to improve phosphorus retention.
“These solutions allow for more sustainable management of rainwater and help reduce the pressure on conventional drainage networks,” stated García Haba. For his part, Ramírez García presented a study on flood prediction using hydrodynamic models and neural networks, aiming to improve risk management.
Subsequently, on October 27th, Eduardo García Haba participated as an invited international expert in the forum “Medellín sponge city: sustainable solutions for urban drainage,” organized by the University of Medellín (Colombia). This meeting brought together representatives from public companies and local authorities to analyze the city's transition towards a more sustainable drainage model.
García Haba shared experiences on the implementation of sustainable drainage systems, emphasizing that “the concept of a sponge city proposes integrating solutions that promote the infiltration, retention, and utilization of rainwater, reducing surface runoff.”
IIAMA-UPV's participation in these events underscores its contribution to the development and transfer of Nature-Based Solutions (NbS), essential for improving rainwater management and moving towards cities more resilient to climate change.
