This initiative is part of a broader municipal strategy to integrate climate protection elements into urban design. The goal is to combat the heatwaves affecting the Valencian capital during the summer by offering structural responses instead of temporary measures.
Municipal services have commissioned a technical study to analyze shade needs in different neighborhoods. The work, which has a four-month execution period, will evaluate sunlight exposure and heritage constraints of various locations to propose suitable technical solutions and define a future municipal ordinance.
The local government already applies sustainability criteria in its interventions, such as the use of noise-absorbing asphalt to reduce noise and emissions, as well as planting large trees. Projects such as the redevelopment of San Agustín square also incorporate vegetation and pergolas to protect pedestrians from the sun.
In addition, the council is working on protecting playgrounds in various districts, such as Benicalap, Patraix, Nou Moles, Benimaclet, and Campanar, with the aim of covering play areas and improving thermal comfort in public spaces.
