Valencia's Plaza de América now features new shade devices, joining Plaza de España, as part of the municipal plan to combat climate stress. This initiative, launched on July 29th, aims to create more comfortable spaces in the city's squares amidst persistent heatwaves.
These new awnings address the public's need for shade and are part of a broader study analyzing unique squares and streets, prioritizing those with the greatest solar and climatic impact. The plan draws inspiration from other cities and includes specific sun exposure studies for each location.
The next phase of the shade plan will analyze this study to define technical solutions, assess installation, assembly, disassembly, and storage costs, with the goal of creating a standardized municipal ordinance. The initial phase, concluding in November, includes delivering technical sheets for each location.
According to Mayor María José Catalá, these devices are intended to integrate structural design elements against high temperatures into all urban projects, rather than serving as mere temporary solutions.
