From October 7, 2026, to January 17, 2027, the IVAM hosts the exhibition «Solo una cosa era extraña, seguir pensando como antes», a proposal that invites us to question our relationship with the living beings around us and to unlearn the way we view nature.
The exhibition brings together two of the artist's productions: «Axolotl» and «Tixinda». Through painting, drawing, video, and sculpture, Smith approaches two endangered animals, the axolotl and the purple sea snail, avoiding common clichés.
The axolotl, an amphibian endemic to the Valley of Mexico with few remaining wild specimens, and the purple sea snail, a marine species historically used for natural dye pigment, are the focus.
The artist uses scales of vision, perspectives, color intensity, and movement to showcase the reality of these living beings. The aim is to raise awareness about how cultural traditions and animals are threatened by humanity's excessive exploitation of nature.
