With temperatures in Canet d’en Berenguer predicted to surpass 40 degrees Celsius, the City Council has launched an awareness campaign to remind residents about its network of climate shelters. These locations, operational since early summer, are distributed throughout the old town and the beach area. A new addition includes a covered court for sports activities.
Mayor Pere Antoni emphasized the seriousness of extreme heat, a phenomenon expected to persist and potentially worsen. He noted the town is under a yellow alert, but this is not the first or last time AEMET will issue such warnings.
“"Extreme temperatures are a phenomenon that is here to stay and, unfortunately, could worsen in the coming years."
In addition to basic recommendations such as avoiding sports during peak heat, staying hydrated, and exercising caution during outdoor physical labor, the Council has designated three climate shelters. In the old town, the Casa de los Llano is open from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM, featuring a library and an exhibition hall currently displaying photographic exhibitions on the Ituren and Zubieta carnivals (Navarra) and on Sustainability. Museums km 0.
On the beach, the administrative extension building serves as a climate shelter. It houses the biblioplaya, open weekdays from 9:30 AM to 2:00 PM, and the Ágora hall, available daily from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM, offering various recreational activities like board games and dancing.
For sports enthusiasts, the covered court at the Sanchis Guarner sports center is now open. The network of shelters is further complemented by municipal gardens, featuring abundant trees, water fountains, and restrooms, located at Félix Rodríguez de la Fuente square, the Blasco Ibáñez gardens, and the Faro gardens.
The City Council also urges residents to monitor official alerts from the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) and disregard rumors or unofficial sources.
