The Department of Animalist Policies in Villena has offered citizens a series of recommendations to help animals cope as best as possible with the noises from pyrotechnics and arquebuses during the patron saint festivities, according to councilman Francisco Iniesta.
The Moors and Christians festivities in Villena have a significant tradition linked to the use of gunpowder. Throughout the celebration days, various events take place including pyrotechnics and arquebuses, such as the Parade, the arrival of the Patron Saint to the city, the Embassies, fireworks, and other acts. Added to these programmed uses are the firecrackers that the population itself may use, always within designated areas and respecting the time slots determined by the Local Police.
«We know that gunpowder is part of our festivities and our tradition, but we also know that certain noises can cause fear, anxiety, or stress in our family animals. With a few simple measures, we can help them experience these days more calmly», stated the councilman, adding that «enjoying our festivities and caring for our animals are not incompatible. It's about understanding their needs, anticipating moments of greater noise, and acting with responsibility and empathy».
Among the recommendations to help animals are keeping them indoors during times of high noise, preventing them from being in patios or terraces. It is also suggested to close windows and doors to reduce noise, and to prepare a safe space where the animal can take refuge. It is advised not to force the animal out of its hiding place if it seeks shelter, and to use music or television at a soft volume to muffle external sounds. If the animal tolerates it, games or treats can be offered to keep its attention occupied. For dogs, it is recommended to take them for walks before the pyrotechnic or arquebus events.
