The Ministry of Health has recorded a total of 37 confirmed measles cases in the Valencian Community since the beginning of 2026. This figure, detailed in the latest Weekly Epidemiological Bulletin, represents the annual cumulative total and not new infections registered during the week of July 27 to August 2.
Since January 1st, 208 potential measles cases have been notified. Of these, 160 have been ruled out, six are pending classification, 37 confirmed, one compatible, and four post-vaccination cases. The number of confirmed cases remains stable compared to the previous week, indicating no recent increase.
The geographical distribution of confirmed cases points to the province of Alicante as the most affected. The Alicante-Hospital General health department accounts for 18 cases, followed by Alicante-Sant Joan with 16. Dénia, Elche, and Elche-Crevillent each report one case. The Directorate General of Public Health notes that case assignment may not always align with the initial declaration department.
Measles is a highly contagious viral disease transmitted through respiratory secretions. Common symptoms include fever, cough, nasal discharge, red eyes, and a skin rash. The Ministry of Health emphasizes that vaccination has kept incidence low in Spain since 1999.
Vaccination, particularly the MMR vaccine, remains the key preventive measure. The Valencian Community follows an updated systematic vaccination schedule. The Ministry maintains an active surveillance protocol to detect and investigate any suspected measles cases, distinguishing between initial notifications and confirmed cases.
