The Department of Citizen Security of the City Council of Alicante has launched the pilot project "Veïns Alerta" in the rural area of El Rebolledo, establishing a direct WhatsApp channel with the Local Police.

The initiative, presented by councilor Julio Calero Rey and commissioner Raúl Romero, aims to improve the quality of life and security in rural areas through citizen collaboration. The project is based on four pillars: a Citizen Alert Network with a direct WhatsApp channel to filter information about incidents, rural incident forms to highlight minor offenses, environmental protection by detecting illegal dumping, and the installation of deterrent signage.
The "Veïns Alerta" platform, successfully operating in Elche for five years, uses unified signage as a key tool to deter criminals, with residents acting as the territory's "eyes and ears".
The recent restructuring of the Rural Areas Unit (UPR), with new commanders, has allowed for increased police pressure and surveillance since late June, aiming for a more proactive approach.
Councilor Julio Calero emphasized that "Veïns Alerta" is a communication channel for non-urgent situations and does not replace emergency lines like 112.
The City Council of Alicante plans to extend the platform to other rural areas of the municipality after testing its effectiveness in El Rebolledo.
