The event, driven by the CPR Commission of the Alicante – Sant Joan d’Alacant Health Department, aimed to improve response capacity in cases of cardiac arrest through continuous training. The commission's president, Mariola Martínez, highlighted the importance of teaching these simple maneuvers to the public, as basic knowledge can be decisive while waiting for medical assistance.
Martínez emphasized that during a cardiac arrest, the interruption of circulation can severely affect organs, especially the brain. Therefore, initiating resuscitation maneuvers, primarily chest compressions, and using an AED if available, can increase recovery chances and reduce long-term effects.
In addition to training, the department continuously reviews and updates its protocols for cardiac arrest response. A specific internal phone number has been implemented to activate immediate responses, and a registry system for cardiac arrests allows for post-event analysis and improvement of care.
The event began with a clinical simulation session for professionals and a workshop led by the Mental Health Unit. Subsequently, the lobby hosted practical workshops open to citizens and hospital staff, conducted by personnel from Intensive Care, Emergency, and Pediatrics.
Martínez noted that this training is an ongoing activity throughout the year, with courses for the public offered at health centers and periodic workshops held at the hospital. CPR training is multidisciplinary and has a public dimension, as an arrest can occur in any setting.
