The research, published in the journal Scientific Reports, indicates that trunk postural control has a closer relationship with general balance than hip strength in older adults who remain physically active. These findings provide valuable data for designing more effective physical exercise programs.
To conduct the study, experts analyzed 127 healthy individuals aged between 30 and 80. Tests included evaluations of isometric hip strength, functional mobility, and trunk stability using posturographic systems. The results show that, although all physical capacities deteriorate over time, the loss of trunk stability is particularly notable.
The authors of the study emphasize that while hip strength is primarily linked to functional mobility, trunk stability is the fundamental pillar for dynamic balance. Therefore, they recommend that training strategies for older adults should include specific postural control exercises.
The researchers remind that any physical activity involving instability must always be performed under the supervision of specialized personnel. The goal is to adapt the workload to each person's physical condition to ensure safety and effectiveness in preserving physical function.
