The Elche City Council will soon resume renovation work on the planters in the Jardín Nieves Berenguer Municipal Park, located on Obispo Barrachina street. This project restarts after the resolution and liquidation of the previous contract, prompted by deficiencies and continued delays in the execution of the work. Consequently, the definitive guarantee deposited by the previous company, amounting to 7,055.94 euros, was seized.
The works have been awarded to the company Obras y Servicios P.Selva S.L. for an amount of 160,325 euros. The project, which will last 3 months, is expected to conclude the work initiated in September 2025. Despite the previous company, CAUCE INFRAESTRUCTURAS S.L., requesting an extension of deadlines, execution only reached 20% of the total planned.
Ahead of the imminent start of the works, the Councilor for Participation and Districts, Loli Serna, accompanied by municipal technicians, met with members of the Sagrada Familia Neighborhood Association. During this meeting, they were briefed on the detailed project and the timelines for completing the works.
The project will resume at the point where the work on the promenade was interrupted. After a pause, traditionally used for closing the street during local festivities, the works will continue during the last week of August.
The works include the renovation of a total of 26 planters. The new structures will consist of exposed reinforced concrete walls, and the upper lining will be replaced with drainage concrete slabs and gravel, instead of the existing artificial turf, in response to a request from the residents. The total length of planters to be renovated is 440 meters.
During the meeting with residents, the possibility of planting large trees for shade or installing sail awnings was also discussed. Councilor Serna expressed her gratitude to the residents for their participation in this meeting, which allowed them to learn firsthand about the final phases of this long-awaited project.
These works involve the renovation of the planters and the improvement of the entire central area, as well as the renewal of urban furniture. The current planters have presented problems with cracks caused by the pressure of tree roots for years, leading to the breakage and detachment of the current lining.
Furthermore, specific repairs to the existing irrigation system are planned to ensure its proper functioning.
