The Elche City Council has changed the name of the Circunvalación Oeste (West Ring Road) to Ronda Ciutat de Guadix. This change serves as a tribute to the city of Guadix and, particularly, to the many individuals originally from Guadix who relocated to Elche in the mid-20th century, significantly contributing to the municipality's industrial, economic, and social growth.
The event was presided over by the mayor of Elche, Pablo Ruz, and his counterpart in Guadix, Jesús Lorente, with the attendance of members from both municipal governments. Mayor Ruz highlighted that this recognition is a "permanent tribute to so many people who one day left their homeland to seek an opportunity and found in Elche a welcoming city." He emphasized that Elche "has always had open arms for those who have come to work, build, and contribute to the common progress," noting that approximately 13,000 residents of Elche born in Andalusia currently reside in the city.
The inauguration coincides with a significant municipal investment of over 200,000 euros for the renaturalization of the city's access road, including new green areas, flowerbeds, and trees, thereby enhancing the image of one of Elche's main entrances.
For his part, the mayor of Guadix, Jesús Lorente, expressed gratitude for the institutional tribute and valued the welcome received by the families from Guadix. "This recognition is moving because it speaks of people, roots, and solidarity between cities. It is a tribute to those who came seeking a better future and found a home here," he stated.
Following the designation ceremony, the two municipal governments held a meeting in the Sala del Consell at the Elche City Hall.
