The journalists, hosted by the UMH-RSF Safe Space program for Freedom of the Press, addressed the use of social media and artificial intelligence (AI) to detect and combat hate speech. The project, led by UMH Journalism Professor José Luis González, aims to enhance understanding of new digital media ecosystems.
Adriana Navarro and Loida Martínez-Avelar, Latin American investigative journalists who have had to leave their countries due to extreme professional risk, shared firsthand experiences from hostile environments. They provided practical insights for identifying hate speech and combating algorithm-induced addictions.
The workshops were held in collaboration with IES La Asunción and Carrús in Elche, targeting Secondary Education students, coordinated by Journalism Professor Carmen María López Rico. In Alcoy, workshops were delivered to the GARA collective and the Red Cross, coordinated by UMH journalist and professor Mireia Pascual Mollà.
All sessions were marked by active participant engagement in discussions, enriching the exchange of information and experiences.
