The Orihuela City Council has commenced the first phase of the renovation project for Glorieta Gabriel Miró, aiming to improve pavement safety and regenerate green areas.

The Mayor of Orihuela, Pepe Vegara, and the Councillor for Infrastructure, Víctor Valverde, have signed the site survey report with the awarded company, Nerco Infraestructuras, greenlighting the start of the works. This action represents a first phase of a broader intervention, which will allow for testing various solutions on-site before extending them to the entire Glorieta.
The initial investment amounts to approximately 140,000 euros and focuses on three main areas: applying an anti-slip treatment to the existing marble pavement, regenerating the flowerbeds and lawns, and renewing the shrub vegetation on one of the platforms. The goal is to address the issue of slippery pavement, particularly in humid or rainy conditions.
The project's technical designer, Miguel Ángel Fernández, highlighted the importance of safety, implementing a bush-hammering and grouting treatment to increase adherence. This initial phase will allow for the evaluation of the effectiveness, maintenance, and aesthetic integration of the solutions before they are widely applied.
Regarding the green areas, affected by shade, humidity, and soil compaction, the substrate will be improved, and native species adapted to low-light conditions will be tested. The objective is to determine which ones perform best in this microclimate for their subsequent widespread use.
Intervention will also take place on the platform between Avenida de España and Duque de Tamames, replacing aged specimens and reorganizing vegetation to create a more continuous and ornamental border, addressing issues of uneven plant growth and irrigation.
Councillor Víctor Valverde recalled that the problems with the Glorieta had been a citizen demand for years, particularly concerning the slippery pavement and the condition of the flowerbeds. He emphasized the experimental nature of this first phase to verify results before investing larger sums.
The municipal action plans for progressive improvement to restore the Glorieta's prominence as a central green space in Orihuela. Once completed, the evolution will be assessed to define subsequent phases.
Mayor Pepe Vegara stressed that the project seeks structural and definitive solutions, testing improvements in this work before extending them. He recalled the Glorieta's historical value as a key social and leisure hub for Orihuela's residents.
The project respects the historical composition of Glorieta Gabriel Miró, employing criteria of minimal intervention and efficient use of public resources.
