The Orihuela City Council, together with Ecovidrio and the Generalitat Valenciana, has launched the 'La Reconquista del Vidrio' campaign to encourage the recycling of glass packaging during the 2026 Moros y Cristianos festivities.

The initiative aims to instill in the citizens of Orihuela, and especially the comparsas (festival groups), the importance of selectively separating glass packaging waste during the celebrations. To this end, bins will be decorated with the campaign's image.
On July 17 and 24, environmental educators will inform festival-goers and citizens about the benefits of glass recycling. On the 17th, a selfie-point will be set up where a gift will be given to those who post a photo on social media with the hashtag #LaReconquistaDelVidrio and tag the City Council. On the 24th, comparsas will be visited to encourage them to recycle, and they will also receive a gift.
In this edition, nearly forty municipalities in the Valencian Community are participating in the campaign, competing to be the population most involved in glass recycling. Orihuela is participating in the Atabales category, which includes municipalities with over 2,500 festival members. Participating comparsas will be entered into a draw for an exclusive glass dispenser.
Additionally, six online promotions will be held at www.lareconquistadelvidrio.es with questions about recycling and the festivities, where participants can win an exclusive campaign miniglú. All information and legal bases will be available on the same website.
Glass recycling is key to sustainability: it is recycled 100% to manufacture new containers indefinitely, preventing landfill growth, the extraction of raw materials, deforestation, minimizing CO2 emissions, and saving energy.
Ecovidrio is the only specialized SCRAP managing the selective collection of glass packaging in Spain since 1997. It works for sustainability and the circular economy, with the commitment of nearly 6,000 packaging companies.
